Sturdy Wax Ultramarine

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Old English weax, beeswax. As a color modifier, wax implies a translucent-and-warm quality, the visual register of beeswax-and-paraffin hand-rolled-and-poured candle-and-wax-tablet beeswax-and-paraffin candle-and-wax-tablet surfaces under candlelit-beeswax-and-paraffin warm-glow. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to waxen and honey in usage.

The pigment ground from lapis lazuli — the Afghan mineral imported through Venice in the late Middle Ages, more expensive by weight than gold during the Renaissance. The color refers to a freshly mixed ultramarine pigment in linseed oil: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the matte finish of micron-ground rock. Deeper than cobalt, cooler than royal, with the art-historical weight of the blue Vermeer reserved for Mary's robe.
