Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Symphytum officinale, the European medicinal plant whose green leaves and root were used in traditional European bone-setting and wound treatment — also known as boneset or knitbone. Comfrey color refers to fresh comfrey leaves on a hedge bank: a soft, slightly muted gray-green with the matte finish of pubescent leaf surface. Cooler than nettle.
