Torrid Axis Jade

Latin torridus, parched / scorching — sharing root with torrēre (to dry by heat). As a color modifier, torrid implies a saturated-and-tropical-hot quality, the bright color of equatorial-Saharan-and-Sonoran-desert mid-summer high-temperature surface-emission. Sits at the bright-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to scorching and fiery in usage.

Latin axis, axle-or-pivot. As a color modifier, axis implies a rotational-pole-and-polar-spin quality, the visual register of Earth-axial-tilt-and-Polaris-axis hand-rotational-pole-and-polar-spin Earth-axial-tilt-and-Polaris-and-celestial-pole axis-and-rotational-pole-and-polar-spin surfaces under Earth-axial-tilt-and-Polaris-and-celestial-pole 23.5-degree-and-precession-and-celestial-mechanics polar-pivot-light. Sits at the modifier-and-cosmic end of the grid, parallel to orbit and zenith in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
