Stained Yamaai
Stained Yamaai (#472D94) is a true indigo with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. Etymology
Old French desteindre, to discolor — past-participle of stain. As a color modifier, stained implies a deep-pigment-and-permanent quality where the hue has bonded with the substrate fiber. Sits at the deep-and-pigmented end of the grid, parallel to dyed and suffused in usage.
Japanese mountain indigo, Mercurialis leiocarpa — a wild herb used for dyeing in the Heian period (794–1185) before cultivated aizome indigo supplanted it. Yamaai color refers to a freshly yamaai-dyed silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of mineral-mordanted natural dye. The plant is the only naturally occurring indican-type indigo precursor in Japan.
