Lambent Sanded Sky

Latin lambēns, licking-lightly — present-participle of lambere (to lick). As a color modifier, lambent implies a saturated-and-soft-flickering quality, the bright color of candle-flame-and-firefly gentle-flickering light-emission against the surrounding darkness. Sits at the bright-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to glimmering and flickering in usage.

Old English sandian, to-sand. As a color modifier, sanded implies a hand-sanded-and-smoothed-wood quality, the visual register of Shaker-and-Mid-Century-Modern-sanded hand-sanded-and-smoothed-and-finished wood-and-stone-and-metal Shaker-and-Mid-Century-Modern hand-sanded-and-smoothed surfaces under Shaker-and-Mid-Century-Modern hand-sanded-and-smoothed workshop-light. The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above.
