Etymology
The progressive participle of smolder, to burn slowly without flame. Used as a color word since the late nineteenth century for the deep reds and oranges of barely-flame coal — the warm saturated darks where the heat is internal rather than emitted. The smaller members of the parrot family — particularly Melopsittacus undulatus, the Australian budgerigar that became the world's most-kept pet bird. The color refers to a typical green-form budgerigar's plumage: a saturated, slightly yellow-shifted green with the matte finish of carotenoid-and-structural feather color.
