Brilliant Chiton Jade

From the Italian brillante, sparkling — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as optically active beyond their literal saturation. Brilliant green, brilliant blue: the implication is luminance combined with the slight sparkle of a high-refractive surface. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside vivid and bright.

Greek χιτών, Hellenic-tunic. As a color modifier, chiton implies a Hellenic-tunic-and-pinned-and-pleated quality, the visual register of Hellenic-Doric-and-Ionic-chiton hand-Hellenic-tunic-and-pinned-and-pleated Hellenic-Doric-and-Ionic-chiton-and-Phidias-Parthenon chiton-and-Hellenic-tunic surfaces under Hellenic-Doric-and-Ionic-chiton-and-Phidias-Parthenon Athenian-Acropolis-and-Hellenic-court Hellenic-tunic-light. Sits at the modifier-and-textile end of the grid, parallel to peplos and tunic in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
