Frantic Honed Jade

Greek phrenitikós, frenzied — adjectival suffix, sharing root with phrenitis (delirium). As a color modifier, frantic implies a saturated-and-rushed-and-overactive quality, the bright color of Memphis-Group 1980s-design over-the-top saturated visual-rhythm. Sits at the bright-and-active end of the grid, parallel to frenetic and manic in usage.

Old English hǣnan, to-sharpen. As a color modifier, honed implies a sharp-edged-and-polished quality, the visual register of Sheffield-and-Solingen-honed-blade hand-honed-and-sharpened-and-polished steel-and-iron-and-bronze Sheffield-and-Solingen-honed-blade surfaces under Sheffield-and-Solingen hand-honed-and-sharpened-blade workshop-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to buffed and gloss in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
