Earnest Sansho
Earnest Sansho (#3A9D03) is a deep lime with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (99°, 96%, 31%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary indigo. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.
Zanthoxylum piperitum, the Japanese sansho pepper — related to Sichuan peppercorn, with citrus-tinted numbing flavor used in unagi glazes and the spice mix shichimi tōgarashi. The color refers to fresh-ground sansho powder in a small ceramic bowl: a saturated, slightly cool yellow-green with the matte finish of dried citrus-family seed.
