Gleaming Wake Sky

The progressive participle of gleam, to shine intermittently. Used as a color word for hues with the slight optical motion of a polished or wet surface. Gleaming gold, gleaming red: the implication is luminance combined with the optical impression of specular highlight. Sits in the bright-and-glossy corner alongside lustrous.

Old English wacian, to be awake. As a color modifier, wake implies a morning-rising-and-dawn quality, the visual register of first-light-and-dawn-rising atmospheric soft-low-light Rayleigh-scattered first-of-the-day pre-dawn-and-dawn surfaces under first-light dawn-rising light. Sits at the modifier-and-time end of the grid, parallel to rise and morn in usage.

The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above.
