Hot Gaul Peridot

Old English hāt, of high temperature — applied metaphorically to color since the eighteenth century for warm hues at high saturation. Hot pink, hot red: the implication is luminous intensity combined with thermal warmth. Sits in the bright-and-warm corner of the grid, alongside burning and vivid.

Latin Gallia, Gaul. As a color modifier, gaul implies a pre-Roman-French-Celtic quality, the visual register of Gallia-Belgica-and-Gallia-Aquitania pre-Roman-period hand-carved bronze-and-iron Celtic-Gaulish chieftain-and-druid surfaces under pre-Roman Gallia-Aquitania-and-Gallia-Belgica Celtic-tribal forest light. Sits at the modifier-and-cultural end of the grid, parallel to celtic and roman in usage.

The transparent green variety of olivine — the gem mined from Egyptian Zabargad Island since pharaonic times and now from arid mountain ranges in Pakistan, Arizona, and Vietnam. The color refers to a faceted peridot: a clean, slightly yellow-shifted green with the gem's signature internal warmth. Lighter than emerald, brighter than olivine in its rough state, with the unusual gem-trade quality of being one of the few minerals that occurs in only one color.
