Etymology
From the Greek Styx, the river of the underworld — used as an adjective in English since the seventeenth century to mean infernally dark. The Russian word for red-orange or ginger — used for autumn foliage, fox fur, and the hair of redheads. Ryzhiy implies a slight blue-green undertone in shadow that distinguishes it from pure orange.
