Dazzling Glen Kelly

The progressive participle of dazzle, to overwhelm with brightness — used as a color word since the seventeenth century for hues that read as intense enough to be momentarily blinding. Scottish-Gaelic gleann, narrow valley between hills. As a color modifier, glen implies a sheltered-and-mossy quality, the visual register of Scottish-Highland deep-cut river-valleys with peat-water-and-bracken hand-cut shieling-and-bothy crofting-life surfaces under Highland-and-overcast sky. A bright yellow-green named for the Irish surname Kelly, common enough by the late nineteenth century to stand in for generic Irish in American slang.
