Bold Khmer Indigo

Old English beald, brave, courageous — a quality word that crossed over to color in the late seventeenth century. Bold describes a color that asserts itself: high saturation combined with mid lightness, where the hue presents itself without compromise. Sits at the center of the bold-bucket grid, near strong and rich. Closer to a presence word than a pigment word.

Sanskrit Khmer, Cambodian. As a color modifier, khmer implies an Angkorian-and-temple-complex quality, the visual register of Angkor-Wat-and-Bayon Khmer-Empire hand-built sandstone-and-laterite temple-and-jungle-overgrown-stonework surfaces under Angkor-Wat-and-Bayon Cambodian-jungle-canopy filtered tropical light. Sits at the modifier-and-cultural end of the grid, parallel to toltec and median in usage.

Indigofera tinctoria, the South Asian legume whose leaves yield the deep blue dye that has clothed humanity for at least four thousand years — Egyptian linen, Mayan textile, the slave-grown plantations of Carolina. The color refers to a freshly indigo-dyed cotton thread: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the slight lustre of a fiber surface oxidized in air. Deeper than cobalt, cooler than royal.
