Radiant Pile Sky

From the Latin radiare, to emit rays — used as a color word since the seventeenth century for hues that read as luminous and emitting. Radiant gold, radiant pink: the implication is high luminance combined with the optical impression of an outward light. Sits in the bright-bucket center alongside glowing.

Old French pile, raised-cut-thread. As a color modifier, pile implies a raised-cut-thread-and-velvet quality, the visual register of velvet-and-corduroy-and-pile-rug hand-cut-and-raised-thread velvet-and-corduroy-and-pile-rug-textile surfaces under velvet-and-corduroy-and-pile-rug textile workshop-light. The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above. The reference shade is mid-latitude noon under a high pressure system: a clean, slightly green-shifted blue with the luminous depth of light scattered across an entire hemisphere of air.
