Funereal Allium

#282f7e
Notes

Funereal Allium (#282F7E) is a deep blue with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Its HSL profile (235°, 52%, 33%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Funereal
adjective

Latin fūnerālis, of the funeral — adjectival form of fūnus (funeral procession). As a color modifier, funereal implies the deep-mourning-and-formal darkness of Victorian-mourning black-textile and requiem-mass deep-violet vestment of Western Christian liturgical tradition. Sits at the deep-and-formal end of the grid, parallel to sepulchral and mourning in usage.

Allium
noun

Ornamental onion (Allium christophii, A. giganteum, A. aflatunense) — Central Asian native bulbs cultivated as architectural early-summer perennials with spherical umbels on bare stems. Allium color refers to a fully bloomed A. christophii umbel: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of dense radiating six-tepalled florets. The architectural allium globe drifted into mid-20th-century cottage-garden style via Beth Chatto.
