Showy Persia Jade

Old English scēawian, to look at — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, showy implies a saturated-and-attention-grabbing quality, the bright color of Las-Vegas-and-Broadway neon-and-marquee theatrical-display lighting. Sits at the bright-and-flamboyant end of the grid, parallel to flamboyant and splashy in usage.

Latin Persia, Persia. As a color modifier, persia implies an Achaemenid-and-Safavid-Imperial quality, the visual register of Achaemenid-Persia-and-Safavid-Persia hand-built Persepolis-and-Isfahan-and-Persian-rug-and-tile Imperial-Persian surfaces under Persepolis-and-Isfahan Achaemenid-and-Safavid Imperial-Persian high-desert light. Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
