Spick Steel

#2277ab
Notes

Spick Steel (#2277AB) is a true azure with a vibrant character. It holds its own as a focal accent, carrying visual weight without tipping into neon territory. Its HSL profile (203°, 67%, 40%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary orange. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Spick
adjective

Old Norse spik-spakr, spike-new — sharing root with spic-and-span. As a color modifier, spick implies a clear-and-newly-cleaned quality where the hue carries the just-polished visual register of fresh-painted-and-fresh-cleaned surfaces. Sits at the crisp-and-clean end of the grid, parallel to spotless and pristine in usage.

Steel
noun

An iron-carbon alloy hardened by heat treatment — and steel blue refers specifically to the blue oxide layer that forms on tempered steel as it's heated through 290°C, the temper colors a blacksmith reads to gauge the correct hardness. The color is the blue of a freshly tempered file: a soft, slightly muted gray-blue with the metallic finish of an oxidation layer. Cooler than slate, warmer than denim.
