From the Greek elektron, amber — the substance whose static-electric properties were observed by Thales of Miletus. The genus Atriplex — saltbushes, the salt-tolerant gray-green shrubs of saline desert, beach, and salina habitats from California to Australia. The color refers to a clump of A. canescens in Mojave Desert: a soft, slightly cool silver-green with the matte finish of salt-encrusted leaf.
