Stately Pelt Emerald

An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Sits in the bold-and-formal corner alongside imperial and royal, with slightly less institutional weight.

Old French pellete, small-skin. As a color modifier, pelt implies a fur-with-skin-and-hide quality, the visual register of fur-trapper-and-Hudson-Bay-Pelt hand-trapped-and-skinned beaver-and-otter-and-mink hand-trapped-fur-pelt-and-hide surfaces under Hudson-Bay-and-fur-trapper hand-trapped pelt-and-hide trading-post light. Emerald green refers to a high-clarity faceted emerald with strong color saturation: a saturated, slightly blue-shifted green with the gem's signature internal life.
