Beaming Quilt Jade

The progressive participle of beam, to emit a directional light — used as a color word since the nineteenth century for hues that read as if focused and projecting. Beaming yellow, beaming pink: the implication is luminance combined with directionality. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside radiant and glowing.

Old French cuilte, padded-cushion. As a color modifier, quilt implies a hand-quilted-padded-textile quality, the visual register of American-and-English-quilt hand-quilted-and-padded patchwork-and-coverlet hand-quilted-and-padded textile surfaces under American-and-English hand-quilted-and-padded textile workshop-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to tufted and flock in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
