Punchy Fen Cerulean

A modern adjectival form of punch, to strike sharply. Used as a color word since the early twentieth century for hues that read as highly contrasting and visually loud. Punchy red, punchy yellow: the implication is full saturation combined with optical impact. Sits across the bold and bright buckets, near vivid and striking.

Old English fenn, marshy ground. As a color modifier, fen implies a flat-marsh-and-reed quality, the visual register of East-Anglian-and-Cambridgeshire low-lying reed-bed-and-eel-trap drained-and-undrained marshland surfaces under flat East-Anglian sky. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to bog and moor in usage.

From the Latin caeruleum, originally referring to dark blue paint pigment of the Roman world, then via French céruléen into English. As a modern art-supply name, cerulean blue is the cobalt-tin oxide pigment introduced in 1805. The color refers to a clean, slightly green-shifted blue with the matte finish of mineral pigment in linseed oil: lighter than cobalt, deeper than aqua, with the painter's weight of a word for sky.
