Acid Pillar Jade

Latin acidus, sour — sharing root with English acrid and acerbic. As a color modifier, acid implies a saturated-and-citric-and-zingy quality, the bright color of lemon-and-lime citrus-fruit-flesh and acid-yellow fluorescent-pigment surfaces. Sits at the bright-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to acidic and electric in usage.

Latin pīla, pillar. As a color modifier, pillar implies a vertical-load-bearing-and-monumental quality, the visual register of Roman-and-Greek-and-Egyptian-Pillar hand-cut Doric-and-Ionic-and-Corinthian-Egyptian column-and-pillar monumental-architecture surfaces under classical-pillar monumental-architecture light. Sits at the modifier-and-architecture end of the grid, parallel to column and plinth in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
