Genuine Limed Topaz

Latin genuinus, natural, innate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as authentic rather than imitated. Genuine indigo, genuine ochre: moderate-to-high saturation combined with the optical impression of a hue from real pigment rather than synthetic dye. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside true and honest.

Old English līm, lime. As a color modifier, limed implies a lime-washed-and-whitened quality, the visual register of Andalusian-and-Mediterranean-limewashed hand-limed-and-whitewashed stone-and-stucco-and-timber Andalusian-and-Mediterranean-limewashed surfaces under Andalusian-and-Mediterranean lime-washed-and-whitened light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to mossed and pitted in usage.

A fluorine aluminum silicate gem, hardness 8 on the Mohs scale, mined for centuries in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Imperial topaz is the prized variety: a warm, slightly pink-shifted gold-orange with the high refractive index of a quality cut stone. Cooler than amber, brighter than honey, with the gem's signature internal fire when held to light. Named for the island of Topazos in the Red Sea, though that source produced peridot instead.
