Brilliant Slab Kelly

From the Italian brillante, sparkling — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as optically active beyond their literal saturation. Brilliant green, brilliant blue: the implication is luminance combined with the slight sparkle of a high-refractive surface. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside vivid and bright.

Old French esclape, splinter / slab. As a color modifier, slab implies a flat-thick-stone-or-wood quality, the visual register of Cotswold-and-Yorkshire-flagstone-and-slab hand-quarried-and-flat-thick stone-and-timber-and-marble hand-quarried-flat-thick-slab surfaces under Cotswold-and-Yorkshire flagstone-and-slab quarry-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to plate and tile in usage.

A bright yellow-green named for the Irish surname Kelly, common enough by the late nineteenth century to stand in for generic Irish in American slang. The color is the saturated, optically bright green of a Saint Patrick's Day parade: cleaner than shamrock, brighter than fern, with the pop-culture weight of a color used annually for green beer, green carnations, and the Chicago River.
