Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. The genus Stachys — particularly S. byzantina (lamb's ear), the cottage-garden perennial with thick silver-velvet woolly foliage. The color refers to a fresh S. byzantina leaf: a soft, slightly cool pale silver-green with the dense velvet matte finish of trichome-covered leaf surface.
