Rugged Smalt
Rugged Smalt (#117BEC) is a true azure with a neon character. It sits at the high-saturation edge of its family. Use it sparingly, as signage, accent, or highlight against darker surfaces. Its HSL profile (211°, 87%, 50%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary orange. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old Norse rugga, rough / coarse — adjectival suffix -ed. As a color modifier, rugged implies a saturated-and-rough-and-weathered quality, the deep-rich color of Scottish-Highlands-and-Norwegian-fjord outdoor-and-mountain landscape. Sits at the bold-and-weathered end of the grid, parallel to tough and sinewy in usage.
A cobalt-glass pigment — pulverized cobalt-tinted glass used in oil painting from the late medieval period through the eighteenth century. Smalt was supplanted by Prussian blue and cobalt blue once those became commercially available. The color refers to fresh smalt pigment in oil: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of glass-particle pigment.
