Centered Smalt
Centered Smalt (#056AB0) is a true azure with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (205°, 94%, 35%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary orange. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Latin centrum, center — past-participle of center. As a color modifier, centered implies a saturated-and-grounded-and-balanced quality where the hue occupies the visual center of its palette without drift. Sits at the bold-and-balanced end of the grid, parallel to poised and grounded.
A cobalt-glass pigment — pulverized cobalt-tinted glass used in oil painting from the late medieval period through the eighteenth century. Smalt was supplanted by Prussian blue and cobalt blue once those became commercially available. The color refers to fresh smalt pigment in oil: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of glass-particle pigment.
