Ebon Gyokuro
Ebon Gyokuro (#033D18) is a deep green with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (142°, 91%, 13%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary magenta. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
A poetic shortening of ebony — used principally in nineteenth-century verse and Edgar Allan Poe (The Raven — ebon bird). As a color modifier, ebon is a literary register for deep black with slight warmth, distinct from the cooler inky and the harder jet. Carries the same weight as the wood it borrows from.
The premium Japanese green tea grown in shade for three weeks before harvest — concentrating chlorophyll and theanine. Gyokuro (玉露 — jewel dew) is the most expensive non-matcha Japanese tea. The color refers to fresh-brewed gyokuro: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-green with the optical depth of shaded-leaf tea.
