Torrid Maya (#01A7FB) is a true azure with a neon character. It sits at the high-saturation edge of its family. Use it sparingly, as signage, accent, or highlight against darker surfaces. Latin torridus, parched / scorching — sharing root with torrēre (to dry by heat). As a color modifier, torrid implies a saturated-and-tropical-hot quality, the bright color of equatorial-Saharan-and-Sonoran-desert mid-summer high-temperature surface-emission. Sits at the bright-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to scorching and fiery in usage.
Maya Blue — a saturated deep-blue pigment developed by the Mayan civilization from indigo dye and palygorskite clay, applied to murals at Bonampak and Cacaxtla. The combination produces unusual long-term lightfastness. The color refers to a freshly mixed Maya Blue pigment: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of organic-and-clay pigment.
