Modest Flit Peacock

Latin modestus, moderate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as understated and unwilling to claim more visual space than they need. Modest taupe, modest beige: moderate-to-low saturation combined with optical restraint. Sits at the crisp-and-quiet edge of the grid alongside quiet and plain.

Old Norse flytja, to-move-or-shift. As a color modifier, flit implies a quick-darting-and-light-winged quality, the visual register of swallow-and-warbler-flit hand-quick-darting-and-light-winged swallow-and-warbler-and-darting-finch flitted-and-quick-darting-and-light-winged surfaces under swallow-and-warbler-and-darting-finch summer-eaves-and-hedgerow-and-meadow-edge dappled-flight-light. Sits at the modifier-and-mood end of the grid, parallel to hover and flutter in usage.

Pavo cristatus, the Indian peafowl whose male displays the most elaborate sexual ornament in birds — a fan of two-meter eyespotted tail feathers in iridescent blue-green. The color is structural, not pigmented: created by interference patterns in the feather barbules. Peacock blue refers to the dominant body color: a saturated, slightly muted teal-blue with the optical depth of structural color. Cooler than persian, warmer than sapphire.
